Recommedations about finding a speech therapist:

Note: AMBI's policy is not to recommend any specific therapy program or therapist; nonetheless, the following recommendations should be helpful.

  1. Is the therapist qualified to treat stuttering and is he/she experienced in stuttering therapy specifically. It should be note here that while many professionals treat people who stutter, formal training in stuttering therapy is being given in Israel only for Speech Language Therapists
  2. Ask the therapist about his therapeutic philosophy. Make sure that his philosophy is in agreement with your needs.
  3. Ask about the therapist's success rate and make sure you receive a realistic and honest response. No experienced therapist will guarantee 100% success.
  4. Ask about long term outcome. You should be aware that many persons who stutter may improve dramatically while in therapy. However, this improvement does not last when therapy is completed. A major goal should be to ensure that improvement lasts.
In addition to the above, the following items should also be considered:
  1. Every person is different (including persons who stutter) and will react differently to different therapy techniques. Finding an appropriate therapy program may take time. Don't be discouraged.
  2. The relationship between the person who stutters and the therapist is of paramount importance; the quality and nature of this relationship will be critical in determining the overall effectiveness of the therapy.

Note: In keeping with our mission of providing an open forum for the exchange of extensive and thought-provoking information about stuttering, the AMBI Web site features links to external sites. In offering such links, AMBI does not take responsibility for the contents of external sites. Nor does AMBI endorse any particular approach to dealing with stuttering.
As people who stutter, we are potential consumers of many treatment services and other programs, including ones from people who are not speech-language therapists. As consumers, it is in our interests to look closely at the information that is out there and to keep in mind the concept of "Consumer Beware."
